Both 7th and 8th grade are covering the Mexican-American War at the moment. We are talking about teh causes, as well as the effects of this war for land. Manifest Destiny is a key term that pushed the U.S. to do whatever it takes to secure the land from "sea to shining sea" for America! Was the U.S. right to take this land? Something to think about....

On this day in history in August 19, 1812, the American warship Constitution caught the British warship Guerrière alone about 600 miles east of the city of Boston. After half an hour of bombardment, the Guerriere was rendered a wreck while the Constitution escaped the fight with only minimal damage. The victory of "Old Ironsides" against a British frigate was definitely unexpected by the American public. The Constitution went on to defeat/capture around seven more British ships in the War of 1812, and also ran the British blockade of Boston twice. The reason "Old Ironsides" is so important (other than being INTENSE) is that, with the victories over the supposedly superior British Navy, the Constitution rallied the American public to get behind the war effort. Patriotism and hope prevail! 'Merica!
